"MOMENT OF TRUTH" REVEALS JUST HOW SICK WE ARE
By: William Cripe Sr.
The debut of Fox's new "reality" show was everything I thought it might be. Weeks before it aired, I determined I would watch the first episode, or as much as I could take, knowing it would reveal the depths to which we are descending as a culture.
The premise of the show is that the contestant who tells the truth through a series of 21 questions wins a half a million dollars. In the pre-game screening the contestant is wired to a lie detector and is asked a series of 50-75 questions from which are taken the 21 questions actually used on the show.
In other words, once a contestant makes it on the show, they are keenly aware which questions "may" be posed. This is stupefying to me.
In the early going, some of the questions are rather benign; slightly embarrassing in a silly way perhaps, but as the money gets larger, the questions become more difficult and more destructive.
As I watched I could only stomach the very first couple of tiers of interrogation. Even some of these "easy" questions were enough to bring significant strife or heart break into the lives of friends or family
With the first contestant's wife and two friends sitting there adding to the drama and humiliation of the situation, the man is asked something close to, "Have you not had children yet because you don't think your wife is the woman with whom you want to start a family?"
The contestant, squirming, lies but the polygraph reveals it was true. So there sits his wife of two years, nationally embarrassed, personally devastated, and because he lied, he walks away with zilch. Great fun, eh?
Honestly I don't know who is worse; Howard Schultz, the creator of this evil show, or the people who are foolish enough to sell their self respect, their privacy, their friends, their family or their marriage for the chance to make some quick cash.
"He who diligently seeks good seeks favor, but he who searches after evil, it will come to him. He who trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like the green leaf." (Proverbs 11:27-28)
According to a CNN story, Schultz said, " We're not out to destroy somebody. I don't think there's any joy in watching someone crumble under the lights. So, typically, the people that we cast to be contestants are stronger people. They have good self-esteem and a strong sense of themselves."
Maybe that helps Mr. Schultz sleep at night but CNN reports that the Columbian version of the show was cancelled after a woman "won" $25,000 after admitting that she had ordered a hit on her husband.
The Bible tells us, "The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately corrupt…" (Jeremiah 17:9) We really don't need a "game show" demonstrating for us what we already know. We are informed of the depraved nature of man every time we read a paper or listen to the news. My prayer is that America says, "Enough." and this show is short lived.
