WAS CAIN A VICTIM OF CHEMICAL IMBALANCE?

By: James J. Jackson

Political Correctness tells us that everyone is a victim of someone or something else, and thereby not responsible for our choices, decisions or actions.  In one expedition into PC, a group of intellectuals tell us that crimes such as rape, murder, robbery are not the willful, manifestation of bad choices, greed, selfishness and simple evil intent, but are actually caused by air and water pollution.

According to the group, Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice, crime is most prevalent in the big cities of America due to lead paint often found in old houses.  Further, many factories located in cities discharge chemicals such as manganese into the air.  The conclusion is then drawn that brain damage, leading to criminal activity, is probably cause by that environment.

They believe biological factors cause people to lose control of their impulses; because lead and other chemicals ”alter human brain chemistry and eventually lower victims’ self control”.  To these ‘pioneers’, biochemistry is the basis of human behavior, and children who live near factories and in older homes are disproportionately exposed to such chemicals.  Poisons ingested from these chemicals leads them to participate in crime.

Let’s suppose that Political Correctness had been around at the time of Adam and Eve.  Cain would have been labeled a victim, for sure.  After all, his mother neglected him, spending time listening to some serpent.  His father joined her in bad choices, resulting in eviction from a perfect home.  The family then had to toil in the soil every day, exposing poor Cain to dangerous chemicals such as lead and manganese.

Food was cooked over an open fire, exposing the kids to smoke and carcinogens.  Cain felt abandoned by his dysfunctional family and by God.  The overwhelming effect of the chemicals to which he had been exposed (through no fault of his own) caused him to become aggressive and kill his brother (who, incidentally, had been exposed to the same elements and family situation with no such ill effects).

Today’s latest excursion into victim-making is just as ridiculous as the above scenario.  To accept this newest theory, there are a few clearly visible factors that must be ignored, such as the fact that many children who turn to crime live in one-parent homes and have little or no direction or supervision. And that daily they are bombarded, not by chemicals, but with the electrical impulses and visual stimuli from movies and music that is negative, immoral and destructive.

A social environment that lacks positive role models is much more deadly than an environment filled with chemicals and lead paint.

Criminal activity more likely grows, in part, from the lack of leadership within inner city communities and the absence of leadership and/or positive role models at home .  Many community leaders are more interested in furthering their agendas (which usually enrich the leaders rather than assisting the poor) than really changing lives.  And too many parents would rather be popular with their kids rather than follow biblical admonishments as to how to rear children.

The main cause of criminal activity is that people make the wrong choices.  Since violent crime takes place  where factories and old houses don’t exist, such as Columbine and Paducah, and is committed by those who haven’t been exposed to lead or factory waste, this “study” is easily refuted as baseless.

The Bible tells us that we are sinners, and that out of man’s heart comes all manner of evil.  The focus should be on turning young hearts back to God by teaching them to obey everything Christ taught us and teaching them to ask God to create in them a clean heart.  The Bible says to “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he won’t depart from it.“ Blaming chemicals for what comes from the heart is simply a dangerous smokescreen.
