The Amy Foundation Awards $34,000 to 15 Writers — First Prize of $10,000 to Tom Flannery for article in the Carbondale News (PA)

LANSING, MI—Tom Flannery is the $10,000 first-prize winner of the 23rd annual 2007 Amy Writing Award.  Tom Flannery is a reporter and columnist for the Carbondale News.   He has written opinion pieces for publications such as Newsday, The Los Angeles Times, MovieGuide, Christian Networks Journal, and WorldNetDaily.  He has won numerous writing awards and is a previous Amy Writing Award winner.

His winning article, “Lovie, Tony A “Super” Pair” described the coaching styles of Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy, head coaches for the 2007 Super Bowl participants, the Chicago Bears and the Indianapolis Colts.  Both men have succeeded in a highly visible, high pressure job of NFL coaching where every decision you make is questioned by thousands of “Monday morning quarterbacks.”  Despite criticism from others who have said they are too easy going and mild mannered to ever make it to “the big game”, they have remained true to their Christians beliefs and seek to honor God in their coaching styles and decisions.

As winner of the Amy Writing Awards $10,000 first prize, Tom Flannery joins a growing list of authors who for 23 years have shown how a compelling presentation of biblical truth applied to the serious issues of life earns a legitimate place in mainstream print journalism.

The Amy Foundation will present the $10,000 first prize to Mr. Flannery at the 2008 annual Michigan Prayer Breakfast, Thursday, May 22, in Lansing.  This first prize presentation will be the Amy Foundation’s celebration of the 23rd anniversary of the Amy Writing Awards.

The Amy Writing Awards program encourages writers to apply biblical principles to contemporary issues. Articles considered for awards must appear in mainstream publications and include at least one Bible quotation. The 2007 winning entries were selected from nearly 700 submissions published in the mainstream print media last year.
